Our second summer in Oregon was in a word… sweet! My dad was a lineman for a small local telephone company. One of his customers had a mature Bartlett Pear tree that was loaded with the biggest, most luscious pears we had ever seen. The man told dad he could have all he wanted as his family didn’t want any. What kind of crazy was that?!?! Dad came home and asked mom if she’d like a bushel of pears. Of course, she said yes! She had a canner and some jars and looked forward to the challenge of processing them. Was she in for a surprise though, when dad got home from work the next evening with THIRTEEN bushels!! We ate fresh pears, pear butter, canned pears, pear crumbles… pears about every which way you can imagine. When it was all said and done mom ended up canning 200 quarts of pears, not counting the other things. Some of them were so big, one pear, peeled, cored and cut in half filled a quart jar!
That daunting task didn’t dampen mom’s spirit, though. She moved onto peaches and then cherries. Our neighbors had 2 cherry trees, and they were more than willing to share. We enjoyed quarts of home canned Bing and Queen Anne cherries, peaches and pears every morning for breakfast. See why I said our second year in Oregon was sweet?!?!
