A yoga eye bag, also called an eye pillow, is a prop commonly used by practitioners at the end of a yoga session to aid in relaxation and meditation. These bags are generally filled with flax seeds, although rice, or even lightweight beans may also be used. The filling helps the bag conform to the contours of the face with gentle pressure and also helps block out the distracting effects of light. Aromatherapeutic herbs, such as lavender or chamomile, are often added to the bag’s filling to enhance the relaxation response.
Silk Material Preparation
Fold the silk material in half with the insides facing out, creating a 4-by-8 inch rectangle. Pin together the two sides of material along the long raw edge and one of the shorter raw edges.
Measure 1/4-inch from the end of the material on the pinned sides, and sew the two pinned sides together using either the sewing machine or needle and thread.
Turn the bag right side out, and smooth the corners. Iron the bag flat if desired, and leave the unfinished edge open for the time being.
Muslin Material Preparation
Create another 4-by-8 inch rectangle by folding the muslin material in half. Pin the two long raw sides together, and then pin one of the short raw edges.
Measure 1/2-inch from the end of the material on the pinned sides, and sew the two pinned sides together using either the sewing machine or needle and thread.
Turn the bag right side out, leaving the unfinished edge open.
Completing The Muslin Bag
Pour the flax seeds into the open edge of the muslin bag.
Pour in the dried herbs or essential oil, and knead the bag to mix.
Fold the raw edges in 1/2 inch, and sew the bag shut 1/4 inch along the folded seam.
